Jose Altuve will wear a different uniform on Wednesday as he plays for Team Venezuela against Houston in an exhibition game.WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — On Wednesday night, with a ballpark buzzing and a club counting on him to set a tone, Jose Altuve will arrive at home plate and lead off. The pitch clock won’t wind, allowing Altuve to act out his prolonged pre-pitch routine.
“Since I remember, probably 10, 11-year-old kid, I was trying to make a Venezuelan team to go in the world championships and stuff,” Altuve said on Monday afternoon. “It’s always a dream for me and for every single Venezuelan kid, Dominican kid, Puerto Rican, American kid to represent their country. I’m really excited and it’s going to bring a lot of memories.
“I think the expectation from now on is make sure the players understand that they’re not 100 percent ready, but they have to give 100 percent of whatever amount of percentage they are,” Team Venezuela manager Omar López said. “It’s an extension of spring training and we have to keep working for them in order to not regress on the steps forward they’ve made already.”
López spent his winter enacting the plan. His first three weeks of spring training carried added stress, especially when Cactus and Grapefruit League games began. Any minor injuries his players sustained could have sidelined them for the Classic, throwing his roster into upheaval. Team Dominican Republic, for example, lost Vladimir Guerrero Jr. after he aggravated his right knee during a Grapefruit League game last week.
