for the CBS show displayed a familiar site to many county residents: The Joor Muffler Man at Juniper Street and East Valley Parkway in downtown Escondido. Like his brethren, he stands 20 feet tall. The fiberglass giant is one of about 300 Muffler Men produced by International Fiberglass in the 1960s and one of about 180 remaining.
They mainly were used for advertising at gas stations and muffler shops. The company stopped producing them in the mid-1970s.Erica and Nick Manning of Escondido have owned the shop for 18 years. In May, they had the giant repainted. He now sports a spiffy red shirt instead of a white one. During the Thanksgiving week, Erica said, he’ll be outfitted with a Santa costume, which was made in 2019 after the previous one had faded in the Escondido sun.
