As part of remembering and celebrating the life and legacy of Jongumsobomvu Maqoma, we should revisit and amend Section 25 of the Constitution so as to create self-reliance and restoration of dignity and identity of black people, writes Vusumzi Mba.
He was the eldest son of King “Lwangada” Ngqika and Nontotho, and was praised by Dr Walter Rubusana in his famous book Zemk’ inkomo Magwalandini.
From an early age, Jongumsobomvu exhibited a number of leadership qualities and skills. He was an eloquent, brave and decisive leader. Chief Maqoma intervened and gave good counsel to King Hintsa, who saw wisdom and thus saved Queen Nomsa. Just like Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma, we have the duty and obligation to put people’s lives and needs first in the struggle for economic freedom. As part of remembering and celebrating the life and legacy of Maqoma and all other African soldiers, warriors and legends who died in the fight against colonialism and imperialism, we should revisit and amend Section 25 of the Constitution so as to create self-reliance and restoration of dignity and identity of black people.
Maqoma was a principled leader; resolute, assertive and brave when he was in personal confrontation with his enemies.
