Former Arsenal coach Jonas Eidevall takes the helm of the San Diego Wave, ushering in a new era for the NWSL club.

The San Diego Wave ’s offseason overhaul neared its completion on Tuesday, when the club announced former Arsenal coach Jonas Eidevall has been named the team’s new coach. He replaces Landon Donovan, who ran the club in the latter half of a 2024 season that saw the club go through three coaches. “San Diego is a city with passionate fans and a vibrant fútbol culture, and I’m eager to contribute to building a winning legacy here,” he said.

“Together with the players, staff, and supporters, I look forward to achieving great things and making unforgettable memories for this club.” Eidevall went 80-18-22 with Arsenal’s women, making him the winningest coach in the history of the club. He inherits a Wave roster that will look very different in 2025. Gone is American goal-scoring legend Alex Morgan, who retired late last summer after announcing she was pregnant with her second child. The club traded longtime players Abby Dahlkemper and Christen Westphal and released veterans Emily van Egmond and Sofia Jakobsson. The Wave are expected to lean on a group of young stars that includes defender Naomi Girma, midfielder Jaedyn Shaw, forward Melanie Barcenas and a pair of French imports, Delphine Cascarino and Perle Morroni, who joined the club midway through last season. Wave owner Lauren Leichtman said that Eidevall’s arrival “marks the beginning of a new era” for the club.
