Favreau has high hopes for The Mandalorian & Grogu.

With just a week to go until The Mandalorian & Grogu’s release, director Jon Favreau is hopeful that the new Star Wars movie will unite every generation of fans.

Following a seven-year hiatus after The Rise of Skywalker concluded the Skywalker Saga, the film side of the Star Wars franchise is finally resuming. Din Djarin, a.k.a. The Mandalorian, and his foundling Grogu are jumping to the big screen after leading The Mandalorian TV series and appearing in The Book of Boba Fett. If Favreau gets his wish, their cinematic adventure will bring together all the Star Wars enthusiasts.

In an interview with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan, the filmmaker mentioned how Dave Filoni, the recently-installed president of Lucasfilm who co-wrote The Mandalorian & Grogu with Favreau and Noah Kloor, “threaded all the different eras of Star Wars together. ” Favreau then observed how “people connect with the Star Wars that hit at the age when they're perfect to receive it.

” As he sees it, The Mandalorian & Grogu is able to “acknowledge” all the eras of Star Wars, acting as a “celebration” of them. Favreau continued: Everybody's walking around, different ages. Everybody's from all different places, different countries. They're all having fun together, and I like it when Star Wars feels like that.

It's very easy to feel that way in person. It's nice to try to bring everybody together with all the different stories. There was a time when A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi were the only Star Wars entry points. Nearly 50 years after the birth of a galaxy far, far away, there are many more options.

The prequel and sequel trilogies both targeted their respective contemporary generations, and there are also various animated and live-action TV shows out there to recruit new audiences. So, while viewers of The Mandalorian’s three seasons and The Book of Boba Fett will get the most out of The Mandalorian & Grogu, this new movie was also built to be accessible to every person who gets excited about Star Wars.

Interestingly, Nielsen unveiled data that broke down the most-watched Star Wars shows by generation. While Gen Z's most-streamed was Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Mandalorian was the most-viewed series with Baby Boomers and Gen Alpha. The stats were based on the first quarter of 2026. At the end of The Mandalorian season 3, Din formally adopted Grogu, set up a homestead on Nevarro, and retired from bounty hunting in favor of doing contract work for the New Republic.

The Mandalorian & Grogu revolves around one of those missions, with Din and Grogu tasked to rescue Rotta the Hutt , Jabba the Hutt’s son, in exchange for information on a New Republic target. Rotta previously appeared as an infant in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie and the episode “Sphere of Influence” of the follow-up TV series.

The Bear’s White voices the adult Rotta in The Mandalorian & Grogu, where he’s shown to be engaging in gladiator-style fights. The movie will also feature Jabba’s twin cousins, who were introduced in The Book of Boba Fett. The Mandalorian & Grogu’s lineup additionally introduces Sigourney Weaver’s Colonel Ward, leader of the New Republic’s Adelphi Rangers. The movie opens in theaters on May 22.
