Courthouse Preservation Partnership, which is hoping to repurpose the building, submitted the application for landmark designation April 14, keeping the building safe from demolition until mid-October, or until the Joliet City Council makes its final decision. The Will County Board voted in January to hire an engineering firm to prepare the scopes for demolition.

Since that 2019 vote, about half the Will County Board has been replaced with new members. “They have no plan for this land. They just want to tear it down,” Butler said. “To me that doesn’t make any sense. … It doesn’t sound like a sound decision ripping down a building that could just be rehabbed.”
