'Joker' spent its entire running time setting up a sequel that will presumably never get made

can act either as a cliffhanger to be resolved in the threequel or a new status quo and a natural conclusion to the story.. Despite discussions about how it differs from the conventional comic book movie, I would argue it does follow a certain origin story formula, albeit for the villain instead of the hero. In that sense, it’s not unlike M. Night Shyamalan’s. If you recall, James McAvoy’s crazed kidnapper/murderer doesn’t become “the Beast” until the last 20 minutes or so of the movie.

Todd Phillips’ early 1980s-set period piece is essentially a supervillain origin story for the Joker, namely how one mentally ill and socially awkward guy comes undone after a series of misfortunes and revelations and becomes the iconic Harlequin of Hate. However, spoiler warning I suppose, he doesn’t go “full Joker” until the last 20 minutes or so of the movie.

He doesn’t go full Joker, purple suit, green hair and face paint, until the movie is pretty much over. The 122-minute movie gives us exactly one major scene with the Joker as the Joker before coming to a grim end. Arthur has become the Joker and introduced himself to the world, with his murderous actions inspiring at least some citizens of Gotham to riot in the streets.
