JOHOR BARU: Johor Umno has warned that the party is at risk of being punished by the rakyat again if it continues to work with Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form a new coalition government.
State chief Datuk Hasni Mohamad said that it does not make sense for Umno to support Dr Mahathir who is Pakatan Harapan chairman.“We have to see whether the new coalition is in the country’s interest or an in individual's self-interest,” he added.“If we do not listen to them, then we will be punished in the next general election, ” he when met after chairing the state Umno liaison meeting at its headquarters here on Friday .
“We are hopeful that the meeting will take place soon and not wait after the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in November. The Star reported that state Umno treasurer Datuk MD Jais Sarday reminded Umno leaders to be careful when they negotiate or work with other parties to form a new coalition government as the party cannot allow itself to support Dr Mahathir. He said the party also needs to be careful so it does not fall into “a trap” as it would be perceived to be helping Dr Mahathir stay in power should the Pakatan Harapan government fall.
Jais said Umno should get its partners to hold the 15th General Election after Dr Mahathir steps down or at least within one year after his departure.
