JOHOR BARU: A 46-year-old man was arrested for possessing illicit cigarettes worth more than RM80,000 at Taman Johor Jaya, here.
Seri Alam OCPD Supt Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said a raid was conducted by the police on a house at 4.05pm on Tuesday and 21 brown boxes containing the illegal items were found.
“The cigarettes’ estimated worth is around RM84,000, and we have also confiscated a vehicle during the raid,” he said in a statement on Wednesday . The case is being investigated under Section 135 of the Customs Act 1967 for being in possession of illicit cigarettes, which carries a fine of up to 20 times the value of the contraband cigarettes, or RM500,000, or jail time of up to five years, or both.
“We are hoping for cooperation from members of the public to continue sharing information on illegal activities like this to protect our country,” he added.
