Johnson clarified that he does not beleive an Authorization for Use of Military Force ( AUMF) is necessary at this stage, emphasizing the need for a swift resolution to the conflict.
He expressed confidence that the administration, including the commander-in-chief and the Department of Defense, is actively working toward that end. Johnson underscored the importance of international cooperation, particularly with Gulf states that Iran has threatened,noting that the issue is not solely America's responsibility. He reiterated the shared global objective of preventing Iran,the largest state sponsor of terrorism,from obtaining nuclear weapons, calling such an outcome a disaster for the globe.
Johnson's comments come amid rising gasoline and oil prices for American consumers, a development that contradicts earlier statements by President Trump following his meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun. The ongoing war with Iran has proven deeply unpopular and poses a political challenge for Johnson as his party faces a narrow majority ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
When questioned about Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, Trump denied that the timing relates to the upcoming elections,insisting his decisions are guided solely by what is right. He stated, "They won't have any impact on me... I'm just going to do the right thing.
" Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) adopted a less definitive posture than both Johnson and Trump, focusing instead on the imediate need to reopen the critical oil shipping lane. Thune stressed that Iran's blockade violates international law and that ensuring the strait's openness is the paramount concern
