The new Congress will convene on Friday as Republicans prepare to take over Washington with control of both chambers and will soon also have the White House when President-elect Donald Trump is sworn into office later this month. Current Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is trying to retain his post with the backing of Trump but is facing opposition from some Republicans.

Johnson is hoping to avoid the fate of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who had to go through more than 15 rounds of voting over the course of a week amid negotiations with GOP holdouts. During the marathon rounds of voting, McCarthy was forced to give significant concessions to GOP hardliners that weakened his grip on power over the chamber and put his speakership in a tenuous position. Those concessions in part led to McCarthy later being kicked out of the speakership by a handful of Republicans and all Democrats just months into the job and ultimately leaving Congress altogether. Whether Republicans quickly coalesce around Johnson could throw a wrench into plans to quickly enact Trump’s agenda in his first 100 days of office.
