John Wahl and Wes Allen are heading to a runoff in the Republican lieutenant governor race.
The Associated Press confirmed there will be a runoff between the two, as less than half of votes had been counted across the state. Wahl trailed Allen for the first couple hours of the race but overtook him as around 20 percent of the votes were counted.
The Athens native maintained the lead from that point and currently has over 40% of the votes. Meanwhile, Allen sits in second with slightly more than 38%, and Rick Pate in a distant third with just above 7%. Wahl told WAFF 48 at his Huntsville watch party on Tuesday night that finishing in a run-off position would be a huge win, especially considering he campaigned for around three months while some opponents campaigned for over a year.
“Last public polling had me in the race at only 13 percent,” Wahl said. “So, to now be in the run-off firmly in the lead position right now is incredible. “The people of Alabama are looking for something different,” he added. “They’re tired of the political status-quo.
They want an outsider who is going to fight, who is going to have a backbone, defend their rights and freedoms, defend their values. ”Explosive device found, detonated at Mobile water reservoirMPD identifies victim in O’Donnell Street homicide; 4 others injuredVoters approve 2 Alabama constitutional amendments
