New York Red Bulls star defender John Tolkin has officially transferred to Bundesliga side Holstein Kiel, according to a source familiar with the deal. The 22-year-old's move to a European club had been anticipated for the past two years, with previous interest from multiple clubs in Germany, Belgium, and Italy. While the Red Bulls had previously declined an offer from Holstein Kiel last year, negotiations intensified on Tuesday night, culminating in the deal's completion Wednesday morning.
Tolkin's departure marks the loss of one of the New York Red Bulls' most talented homegrown players. His 17 assists across all competitions stood as a team record, and he also contributed seven goals in MLS play. Holstein Kiel, currently battling relegation in the Bundesliga, finds itself in 17th place out of 18 teams. However, a recent impressive 4-2 victory over Borussia Dortmund has brought them within three points of escaping the relegation zone. Tolkin's move will offer him the opportunity to secure consistent playing time in one of the world's most competitive leagues, further advancing his career within the United States' national team system. Tolkin is currently participating in the US men's national team's January camp, preparing for potential friendly matches against Venezuela on January 18th and Costa Rica on January 22nd. This marks his fourth camp with the senior team as he aims to solidify his position and secure more playing time with his sights set on the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States next summer. The Red Bulls will need to address the void left by Tolkin's departure. Although the MLS transfer window opens on January 31st, they will face the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for one of their most valuable assets.
