The First Minister will make a statement to MSPs at Holyrood today setting out the priorities of his new government.
John Swinney will announce today that eradicating child poverty in Scotland will be "the single most important objective" of his government.
It comes after Scotland's most senior civil servant yesterday warned the new SNP leader he will have to cut spending further in order to balance the government's books. It is estimated that more than four million children - almost a third of the nation's youngsters - live in poverty across the UK.Swinney’s predecessor Humza Yousaf also said combating child poverty was his top priority.
"I intend to build on our record of delivery. Since 2007, economic growth, per head, and productivity have been stronger in Scotland than the rest of the UK, Scotland’s core A&E units are the best performing in the UK, and measures such as our Scottish Child Payment are estimated to keep 100,000 children in Scotland out of relative poverty this year.
"My government will do everything in our power – working with Members from across parties – to make child poverty a thing of the past."
