Known as a hard man on the pitch, the four-time premiership captain had suffered from dementia in recent years.

The South Sydney rugby league great, John Sattler, has died at the age of 80.

Sattler, who played 197 times for the club and captained the team to four premiership victories from 1967 to 1971, had suffered from dementia in recent years. During a playing career spanning 16 years, the uncompromising forward also played 16 matches for Australia, including four Test matches, three as captain.In the 1970 grand final, he insisted on playing on despite suffering a broken jaw after being punched early in the game by rival forward John Bucknall.

A photograph of Sattler with his bloodied jaw on his teammates’ shoulders has become one of rugby league’s most iconic images.
