John Oliver challenged Disney to duel over one of the corporation’s most beloved characters.
Mickey appears in the Walt Disney Animation Studios opening logo “does feel like a tactical legal move,” adding, “Basically, they may argue that this early Mickey’s image is so closely associated with their company that people automatically assume that any image of him was produced or authorized by them, and still take legal action.”
The late-night host then declared his intention to test this theory. “The fact is, anyone wanting to use theMickey Mouse will probably still be taking a risk,” he continued. “But if you know anything about this show by now, we do like to take a risk every now and then.” Oliver then introduced “a brand new character for this show”: a black and white Mickey Mouse fashioned after the iconic figure. “We are staking our claim to Mickey Mouse right now,” before the character enters the public domain in 2024, Oliver said. “I know Disney’s lawyers might argue that this Mickey is closely associated with their brand, although they should know that he’s pretty associated with our brand now too.”throughout his latest season.
