The UK industry is facing the same major threats as the American one: stagnant pay rates, encroaching AI

So many brilliant actors in this country eke out an existence from job to job, taking on other work to tide themselves over financially so that they can be available when that week on a big production comes in.

And they are not the only ones threatened by this. It’s important to remember that the backbone of the UK film and television industry is not the actors – it’s the incredible army of what’s known as “below the line talent”. This is, basically, everyone behind the lens – from the camera department, sparks, sound team, and make-up artists to the location managers, caterers, unit drivers and post-production houses .

We are fortunate to have world-leading talent in all these departments in this country and the strike is even more of a disaster for them. So many friends on the other side of the camera have already been stood down as a result of the Writer’s Guild of America Strike, often without a guarantee that the productions they were working on will re-start.So, will all the pain be worth it? We’re certainly at a historic juncture.

All of us are hoping the AMPTP – the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers – can get back around the table with SAG-AFTRA and get this resolved. Whatever they decide over there, it will reverberate throughout the industry over here. John Hollingworth stars in the forthcoming Ridley Scott film Napoleon, released globally on 11 November; you can follow John on Twitter:
