The wait is over for Giants fans.
His five-year deal is expected to pay him about $100 million, making him one of the NFL’s highest-paid coaches. Now comes the hard part — rebuilding a franchise that is 7-27 over the past two seasons and 13-38 during the past three years, on top of so much other losing since Tom Coughlin’s firing after 2015.
With the Giants, the 63-year-old Harbaugh — who was just fired as the Ravens’ head coach after 18 years — will try to become the first coach to win a Super Bowl with two different franchises. Harbaugh agreed to take the Giants job late Wednesday evening, just before midnight. His camp and the Giants hammered out the contract Thursday, Friday and into Saturday, raising concerns among fans who wondered why this process was taking so long.“I can’t wait to get started with the great players on this football team, to see what we can accomplish together,” he said. Reporting structure reportedly was part of the reason for the drawn-out contract negotiations. The Giants have had their head coach report to the general manager, not to co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch. In Baltimore, Harbaugh reported to ownership, as did the Ravens’ GM. Other teams, like the Eagles, also have both coach and GM reporting to ownership. So that is not an unusual arrangement. And considering Harbaugh has accomplished a lot more in his career than Giants GM Joe Schoen — who somehow wasn’t fired after 2025 — it makes sense for Harbaugh to report to Giants ownership. It remains unclear how the Giants have laid out their reporting structure now that Harbaugh is officially their coach. But it would not be surprising if they changed things and had Harbaugh reporting to ownership.
