Cornyn, who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002, has long sought to be Senate Majority Leader, the first from Texas since Lyndon B. Johnson.

U.S. Sen. John Cornyn lost his bid to become the first Senate majority leader from Texas in more than 60 years ago, as the chamber's Republican s instead lined up behind South Dakota Sen. John Thune during a closed-door vote on Wednesday. Cornyn, a former Texas attorney general who was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002, has long coveted the role. He served as Republican whip from 2013 to 2019, the number two position in the Senate, under Mitch McConnell.

And he said the chamber should stay in session indefinitely if Democrats try to block President-elect Donald Trump's cabinet appointments when he returns to the White House in January.

Ted Cruz backs Rick Scott for Senate majority leader, snubbing fellow Texan John Cornyn Ahead of a closed-door forum for majority leader candidates Tuesday evening, Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D., said while he was supporting Thune there wasn’t much difference between him and Cornyn. “Cornyn told me yesterday or the day before, ‘it’s so funny, people are telling me are the mirror image of each other,” he said. Trump declined to endorse a candidate for majority leader.
