According to John Boyega, one of the final steps in the StarWars casting process was a screen test with Chewbacca, which came after 'seven months of extreme auditioning.'
John Boyega was cast as Finn in Star Wars after a Chewbacca screen test. The British-Nigerian actor first rose to prominence in 2011 for his role in the sci-fi comedy Attack the Block and later starred in all three films in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Boyega's character, Finn, is a stormtrooper named FN-2187 who teams up with a Resistance pilot Poe Dameron in order to escape from the First Order.
The reformed stormtrooper later went on to discover his Force-sensitive abilities, though the character never quite reached his potential as a Jedi. This is something Boyega has been quite vocal about when criticizing J.J. Abrams and others who were behind the sequel trilogy, along with their handling of other characters played by Kelly Marie Tran and Naomi Ackie.
I got a call about the auditions for Star Wars and my agent told me that J.J. Abrams wanted to meet with me and put me on tape for the role. I didn't know what part I was going up for and I hadn't read the script, so I took a train into central London, met J.J., spoke about the role, and then did the scenes. It was two scenes; I practiced it a few times, and then we put it on tape.
It's no surprise Abrams would want to do a screen test with Boyega and Chewbacca, given how much screentime they share in The Force Awakens. This includes their initial meeting on the Millennium Falcon, their travels to the planet Takodana, and their destruction of the Starkiller base, all accompanied by Rey and Han Solo .
Abrams returned for the final film in the trilogy, Rise of Skywalker, and Finn was reunited with Chewie and the gang as they embark on a mission to Pasaana. Screen tests are often used to determine if an actor is suitable for a particular role or has the correct chemistry with other actors. They are an important part of the casting process for franchises that do as much due diligence as Star Wars. .
