Joey King's Uglies Movie Can Avoid Divergent's Franchise Mistakes Divergent's Fourth Film Was Canceled Close Uglies has the potential to redeem the Divergent franchise after it epically failed in the 2010s. Similar to Uglies, the Divergent film series is based on a sci-fi novel written by Veronica Roth and chronicles a post-apocalyptic dystopian future where people are separated into five factions — Abnegation , Amity , Candor , Dauntless , and Erudite .
Despite receiving mixed to negative reviews, Divergent's first two films performed well at the box office. However, the same could not be said for the third movie. The initial plan was to split the third and final book in Roth's series into two films. When The Divergent Series: Allegiant premiered in 2016, though, it was a box office bomb, resulting in the studio canceling part 2. Consequently, the Divergent franchise was never complete, and Uglies has the tools to avoid this fate.
Netflix is in dire need of a franchise after canceling Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon series, and Uglies has the material and star power to be just what the streaming service desires.
