San Jose’s Joey Chestnut will not defend his hot dog eating crown after he agreed to a sponsorship deal with vegan food brand Impossible foods

Competitive eater Joey Chestnut holds a plate of hotdogs representing his world record for eating 76 hotdogs and buns in ten minutes during a weigh-in ceremony before the Nathan’s Famous July Fourth hot dog eating contest, Monday, July 3, 2023, in New York. San Jose’s Joey Chestnut has been banned from competing in Nathan’s Famous Hotdog Eating Contest on July 4.

Chestnut did not immediately respond when reached for comment via his website, and Impossible Foods also did not respond to request for immediate comment. In an email from MLE, spokesperson George Shea said Chestnut is not banned from all MLE competitions, just the Nathan’s contest. Chestnut devoured an astounding and record-breaking 76 hot dogs and buns to win the Nathan’s contest in 2021, and took first place in 2023 by putting away 62 hot dogs and buns.
