Simtian and Low are fighting for a spot in the November general election.

Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, a candidate in the crowded congressional District 16 race, speaks to supporters at his election night party at the Palo Alto Creamery, Tuesday, March. 5, 2024, in Palo Alto, Calif. The race for second place in California’s District 16 congressional race remains tight as Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian has a one vote lead over Assemblymember Evan Low.

On Friday, Simitian was ahead by four votes, but Low was able to close the gap some after the latest round of results were released Monday afternoon. In Santa Clara County, Low picked up nine votes while Simitian added five new votes. In San Mateo County, Low received one new vote and Simitian added two votes. District 16 encompasses parts of both counties and stretches from Pacifica in the north to Los Gatos in the south.

Low and Simitian are vying for a spot in the November general election to face former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, who leads by roughly 8,000 votes. As of Monday, Santa Clara County had 825 ballots left to count, though 800 of those are challenged ballots that have signature issues. Meanwhile, San Mateo County has 562 challenged ballots remaining. Voters have until April 2 to remedy their challenged ballots.
