General manager Joe Schoen can recast the direction of the New York Giants — and make everyone forget about Dave Gettleman — with a good week at the NFL Draft.
for Schoen that it would take something truly extraordinary for the new guy, armed with the fifth and seventh picks, for alarm bells to sound about his competence.
This week in Vegas is when his heavy lifting really begins. At the minimum, Schoen needs to get what he called “foundational pieces” from the Giants high first-round picks on Thursday night. If that’s an anchor for the right side of the offensive line and a lockdown cornerback , nearly everyone will stamp this draft as a success.
But whether this is remembered as a good draft or a truly transformational one depends on how Schoen performs on Friday and Saturday. And, beyond this week, can he add picks in 2023 when the Giants might be back in the market for a starting quarterback?, are likely to discover that the quarterback they inherited is not good enough to make their team a contender. For now, they’ll try to surround him with a supporting cast that will help him take the big step, in his fourth season, that he was unable to make in his first three.
