Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow may be returning, but his return could come with a deep physical limitation.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has returned to practice, and there is a strong belief that he will retain starting duties on Thanksgiving when the team takes on the Baltimore Ravens on Nov. 27.
However, his return could come with a major physical limitation. The initial belief was that he would miss the rest of the 2025 season, but he began to attack his recovery to ensure he could take the field again. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor was transparent about the situation, stating that Burrow was recovering in a very speedy way. That was clearly the case, as the 21-day practice window was opened for the star passer. LANDOVER, MARYLAND – AUGUST 18: Joe Burrow #9 of the Cincinnati Bengals warms up before the game against the Washington Commanders during the NFL Preseason 2025 game between Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium on August 18, 2025 in Landover, Maryland. More NFL news: Report: Broncos’ JK Dobbins Receives Devastating News Amid His Severe Ankle Injury Despite the excitement about Burrow returning and the hope that he could propel the Bengals to a playoff berth, his physical body will not be 100 percent. Per a report from Ian Rapoport, the Cincinnati signal caller will have a major physical drawback when he does take the field. “That should continue, as Burrow’s rehab hits the on-field stage. Whenever he returns to game-action, the likelihood is he’ll do so with a metal plate in his shoe and without full mobility, sources say. Burrow and the team will likely have to adjust their standard playbook, but that would be worth it to have Burrow back,” Rapoport wrote. Rapoport indicated through sources that Burrow will have a metal plate in his shoe, and will not have full mobility. This could heavily impact the way he can play, which will lead to the playbook being altered. Though these issues sound like they may hinder Burrow, it appears the team believes that his return in any form will be most welcome. The Bengals are currently 3-6, and can only afford one more loss if they are truly to find a way to make the playoffs. Teams that go 10-7 are generally those that can make the playoffs, but having seven losses might still be too great a risk. Either way, Burrow is set to be under center in the coming weeks, so the metal plate and mobility issues will be something that the Bengals are willing to risk to have their star back.
