Joe Biden announced that he and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, had tested negative for coronavirus.
According to published reports, Biden did not learn directly of Trump’s positive test results from the White House. Instead, he, like the rest of the country, found out when the president tweeted about it shortly after midnight.
On Friday morning, the NBC correspondent Mike Memoli reported that there was “a lot of anger from the Biden camp” over the events of the past few days, particularly the behavior of the Trump family at Tuesday’s debate. The first lady and the rest of the president’s adult children entered the hall at the Health Education Campus of Case Western Reserve University all wearing masks, as required by the debate organizers. But the minute they took their seats, they took their masks off, and thenwho brought them new masks to put back on. Dr. Jill Biden kept her mask on throughout the entire debate. Interviewed on MSNBC, Memoli said that the family’s behavior incensed the Biden staffers because their campaign had been careful the entire election season to follow strict pandemic protocol and to follow local guidelines at each of their campaign events. And, of course, Trump has repeatedly mocked Biden for his mask-wearing, most recently at Tuesday’s debate. “When needed, I wear masks [but] I don’t wear masks like him,” Trump told moderator Chris Wallace, gesturing toward the former vice president. “Every time you see him, he’s got a mask. He could be speaking 200 feet away from them, and he shows up with the biggest mask I’ve ever seen.”After a delay to find out the results of his coronavirus test, Biden continued his path on the campaign trail Friday afternoon, giving a speech in Grand Rapids, Mich. “I'd like to just start by acknowledging, which I'm sure all of you do as well, sending my prayers for the health and safety of the first lady and the president, president of the United States, after they tested positive for COVID 19,”, wearing a mask and addressing a small group of socially distanced supporters. "My wife Jill and I pray that they'll make a quick and full recovery. This is not a matter of politics. It's a bracing reminder to all of us that we have to take this virus seriously. It's not going away automatically. We have to do our part to be responsible." And the former vice president again addressed the importance of following the advice of health experts, some of whom have been undercut by the very president they work for. "The seriousness of this virus also underscores that we need regular testing with results turned around rapidly and that's available to everyone," Biden said. "It's not just the folks in the White House or who travel with me who deserve regular testing. It's folks in the meatpacking and food processing plants. Grocery store workers. Every single American deserves safety and peace of mind." Although the Trump camp has called for Biden to suspend campaigning for 14 days, the typical quarantine period for someone who has been diagnosed with Covid-19, the Biden camp indicated it had no plans to do so. The former vice president's running mate, Sen. Kamala Harris, along with her husband, Douglas Emhoff, whom the Biden staff said had both tested negative on Friday, went ahead with planned campaign trips to Nevada and North Carolina, respectively. A virtual fund-raiser with Harris and former President Barack Obama was also scheduled to go ahead.
