Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden called the challenge in reopening America's schools a"national emergency" Wednesday that was compounded by President Donald Trump's failure to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.
The positions contrast with Trump, who has urged schools and colleges to reopen. Trump has promoted the development of vaccines and therapies for treating COVID-19. He said the spring shutdown was important to prevent the deaths of millions of people, but that states, their schools and businesses should reopen.
"It’s unacceptable. We can’t go on like this," Biden said."We all want our schools to reopen – safely. With a plan that prioritizes the health of students and educators alike."
