President Biden arrived in Northern Ireland on Tuesday to celebrate a quarter-century since theended the U.K. province’s civil conflict, part of a four-day trip that also will take him to his family’s ancestral homeland, the Republic of Ireland.
Mr. Biden, who like many Americans embraces his Irish roots, was greeted at the Belfast airport by U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. The visit kicks off in earnest on Wednesday with another meeting with the U.K. leader and a speech at a Belfast university expected to commemorate the 1998 agreement and underscore an American commitment to keep the peace in the restive province, which remains largely cleaved between pro-U. K. Protestants and pro-Irish Catholics.
