The serving President said the decision 'is in the best interest of my party and the country'
Joe Biden has announced he will not stand against Donald Trump in the US presidential election after stepping down as Democrat leader. The 81-year-old has been under increasing pressure to step aside amid concerns about his health, following his disastrous debate performance with Trump.
He said in his statement he would address the nation on the matter next week. President Biden thanked his Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she was an "extraordinary partner". California Rep. Adam Schiff, a close ally of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, became the highest-profile House Democrat to call for Biden to drop his reelection bid, saying that while the decision is Biden’s alone to make, he believes it’s time to “pass the torch”.
