The Jockeys’ Guild has called off its planned no-whip day on Friday after reaching an agreement with the Thoroughbred Owners of California.

after reaching an agreement with the Thoroughbred Owners of California.

This halts an experiment that had showed no shortage of horses at the entry box but was being watched nationally to see if the lack of a whip would discourage bettors and have an impact on the mutuel handle, or amount wagered.

“For the past month we have received virtually no support from industry organizations in California until contacted by the TOC in the last day and a half. In the interest of moving forward to create a safer environment for both equine and human athletes, we have agreed to work with the TOC to come to a mutually agreeable position on riding crop usage in California to be submitted to the CHRB.

“It is and has been the Guild’s position that we must have rules that are in the best interests of all of our industry participants — horses, owners, breeders, racetracks, trainers, jockeys and the betting public whose interest fuels our sport.” The Guild also announced it will have the jockeys use an experimental riding crop, or whip, that was used at Keeneland last weekend. The 360 GT is supposed to be easier on the horses yet still as effective.
