A jockey is in intensive care after being brought down by a fall in a Ballarat jumps race on Sunday where another horse suffered fatal injuries. Lee Horner, 34, was initially taken to a local hospital with a head injury before being rushed to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. He was admitted to ICU with a bruise on the brain, according to the Victorian Jockeys Association.
Mighty Oasis suffered a “serious injury” and was euthanised, according to stewards. The horse’s jockey Chris McCarthy escaped injury but Horner and Gordon were both taken to hospital. Gordon suffered a suspected shoulder injury. Sky Hero and Bell Ex One were both found to be lame in the off foreleg, stewards said. The ill-fated final race capped off a horror day in Ballarat after two horses had already died.
