Apprentice jockey Brandon Wilkie has received a 14-month suspended sentence for causing grievous bodily harm to a rival colleague following a dispute over racing performance.
A professional jockey has been issued a suspended prison sentence following a violent altercation that left his colleague and former roommate with severe facial injuries.
The incident, which took place in August 2025, involved apprentice jockey Brandon Wilkie and his flatmate, Kyle McHugh. According to the court testimonies, the two men had been out socializing before returning to their shared living quarters in Newmarket. The tension reportedly escalated when McHugh posed a question to Wilkie regarding his recent performance on the racetrack, specifically asking when he had last ridden a winner.
Although Wilkie initially attempted to dismiss the comment by urging his housemate to leave it, the situation deteriorated rapidly upon their arrival at home. Wilkie launched a physical assault against McHugh, striking him in the face with a punch that caused him to collapse. Despite the victim being incapacitated on the ground, the assault continued as Wilkie delivered further kicks and punches, causing catastrophic damage to McHugh's face.
The physical evidence presented to the court highlighted the severity of the attack, with McHugh suffering from a broken nose, a fractured eye socket, a fractured jawbone, six chipped teeth, and a deep laceration to his eyelid. Following the assault, Wilkie reportedly helped the victim to his feet while making a chilling remark about teaching him manners.
Evidence further surfaced that Wilkie had recorded a video of the injured victim and distributed it to acquaintances with a caption mocking the violence as a corrective lesson. The legal aftermath resulted in Wilkie being charged with grievous bodily harm. During the sentencing hearing, the judge handed down a 14-month custodial sentence, which was suspended for a period of 12 months.
Additionally, the court ordered Wilkie to pay financial restitution to the victim in the amount of £500. While McHugh endured a grueling eight-week recovery process before he could safely resume his career as a jockey, the professional consequences for Wilkie have been significant and ongoing. Having not competed in British racing since the incident occurred, Wilkie attempted to continue his career in Ireland.
However, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board ultimately intervened, placing an indefinite interim suspension on his racing license pending the final resolution of all legal proceedings associated with his criminal conviction. The case has sent shockwaves through the horse racing community, highlighting the dark side of professional rivalries and the severe disciplinary measures taken against those who cross the line into criminal violence.
The court emphasized that such behavior is unacceptable regardless of personal frustrations or career pressures faced by athletes within the industry, underscoring that the severity of the injuries required a firm response from the justice system to maintain public order and standards within the sport
