DA Mayor Mpho Phalatse has cancelled the City’s New Year’s celebration event, to redirect funds towards recovery efforts from the devasting flooding earlier this month.In the last two years, the New Years’ Celebration Events were postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic which imposed restrictions on public gatherings.
“However, with the recent floods, the City now finds itself having to confront another challenge which compels us to cancel this year’s event. The torrential rains have destroyed infrastructure and left many of our residents destitute. Thus, the City has devoted Its resources to responding to the disaster endured by our residents,” the office confirmed.: “We cannot, in good conscience, prioritise a year-end celebration over the well-being of our residents.
