Jobless rate rises slightly in May across Southern California

The unadjusted unemployment rate for California was 4.5%, unchanged from April.

The unemployment rate in the four-county region ticked up in May.

The data released Friday, June 16 by the state Employment Development Department shows the jobless count for each county rose from April while the state’s overall jobless count was flat.Los Angeles County’s rose to 5% in May, up from a revised 4.9% in April. Total nonfarm employment in the county rose by 9,000 positions to more than 4.6 million. The leisure and hospitality industry added the most jobs , according to the EDD.

In Orange County, where seasonally adjusted numbers were not available, the May unemployment rate was 3.2%, up slightly from 3% the previous month. Nonfarm employment rose by 7,700 jobs to 1,716,100 from 1,708,400. Employment rose in eight of the 11 industry sectors, according to EDD, with leisure and hospitality leading the way with 2,000 new jobs in a month.

The unemployment rate in Riverside and San Bernardino counties was 4.4%, up from a revised 4.1% in April 2023, and above the year-ago estimate of 3.4 percent. Total nonfarm employment rose 7,400 jobs to 1,676,100 from 1,668,700. Agricultural employment increased by 1,500 jobs. Construction jobs for the two-county region led the way, adding 3,400 jobs.

The unadjusted unemployment rate for California overall was 4.5%. It was also 4.5% in April and 4% in May 2022.
