NEW: Jobless claims tumble slightly in good sign for economy
Falling jobless claims are a sign the economy is still adding jobs despite the Federal Reserve’s efforts to tighten monetary policy to slow economywide spending and bring down inflation.
For a lengthy stretch between early August and the middle of September, jobless claims defied expectations and remained low. Since the start of October, though, they have been above 210,000.The new numbers come a day after the Fed hiked interest rates by a whopping 75 basis points, the fourth straight hike of such an aggressive degree. The move is designed to dampen demand by raising borrowing costs but can result in the economy falling into a recession and people possibly losing their jobs.

All eyes will be on Friday’s release of the October employment report. The past several reports have clocked in at high levels, giving the Fed more resolve to keep jacking up rates.
