Crawford, born in San Antonio in 1905 as Lucille LeSueur, was the subject of last week's"RuPaul's Drag Race" episode. Crawford isfigures with ties to San Antonio. In order to win the week, competitors needed to embody a different era of Crawford's life and career in a"Rusical," or a musical parody. The Rusical, entitled"JOAN: The Unauthorized Rusical," was directed by Adam Shankman, director of the films"Hairspray,""The Wedding Planner" and"Disenchanted."
The musical featured spoofs of Crawford's roles in"Whatever Happened to Baby Jane" and"Mildred Pierce," along with references to real-life events like with the raising of her daughter Christina, which sometimes got abusive, according to Christina's memoir, entitled"Mommie Dearest."That memoir was turned into the 1981 film"Mommie Dearest," starring Faye Dunaway as Crawford.
