The former regional secretary of the Dullah Omar region was only nominated from the floor on Saturday night after the convenor of the interim provincial committee, Lerumo Kalako declined his nomination.
CAPE TOWN - In a surprise election, Vuyiso JJ Tyhalisisu was voted in as the new chairperson of the African National Congress in the Western Cape.While Cameron Dugmore was expected to get the vote in the run-up to the election, Tyhalisisu managed to get over the line in a lengthy voting session - garnering 311 votes compared to Dugmore's 282.
Tyhalisisu was only nominated from the floor on Saturday night after the convenor of the interim provincial committee, Lerumo Kalako declined his nomination.Richard Dyantyi who was also touted as the next chairperson failed to even meet the threshold to make it onto the ballot paper. Anwa Dramat, former head of the Hawks, who was expected to become the secretary also didn't make the cut, like Dyantyi.Ayanda Bans is the deputy secretary and Derek Appel was voted in as treasurer, unopposed.
Tyhalisisu will now be expected to close the conference later on Sunday, before President Cyril Ramaphosa makes his closing remarks.
