Former President Jimmy Carter posthumously received a Grammy Award for his audiobook, 'Last Sundays in Plains: A Centennial Celebration.' The album, featuring 10 tracks of folk songs and Sunday school lessons, captured Carter's final lessons delivered at Maranatha Baptist Church in Georgia. The Recording Academy recognized Carter's contributions in the audiobook, narration, and storytelling recording category.
This marks Carter's fourth Grammy Award in this category, breaking his previous tie with Maya Angelou and setting a new record. He previously won for 'Faith: A Journey For All' (2019), 'A Full Life: Reflections at Ninety' (2016), and 'Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis' (2007). Jason Carter, Jimmy Carter's grandson and chair of The Carter Center governing board, accepted the award on his behalf, alongside Kabir Sehgal, who handled the album's instrumental arrangements. 'Having his words captured in this way for my family and for the world is truly remarkable,' Jason Carter said during the acceptance speech. 'Thank you to the academy.'The former president's victory over renowned artists like Barbra Streisand, George Clinton, Dolly Parton, and producer Guy Oldfield highlights his enduring legacy. Carter's political career spanned from 1977 to 1981, but his dedication to public service continued even after leaving office. Through his work with Habitat for Humanity, he actively contributed to improving lives and building communities. His passing on December 29, 2024, was mourned by many who recognized his commitment to peace, human rights, and compassion. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Smith Carter, preceded him in death on November 19, 2023. His son, Chip Carter, reflected on his father's life, stating, 'My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. My brothers, sister, and I shared him with the rest of the world through these common beliefs. The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.
