The service, held at the Washington National Cathedral, began at 10 a.m. ET and lasted about two hours. Among the attendees were President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden; former presidents and first ladies, including the Trumps and the Clintons; and Supreme Court justices.
A standout eulogy was delivered by Steven Ford, one of the sons of former President Gerald Ford. Carter had asked Walter Mondale, his vice president, and Ford, his former political rival, to deliver eulogies at his funeral. Ford's remarks, prepared before his death, highlighted the unlikely friendship forged between the two presidents during a flight back from Egyptian President Anwar Sadat’s funeral in 1981. Other notable moments included performances by country stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who sang John Lennon’s “Imagine” and a homily by Rev. Andrew Young, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. Biden, in his eulogy, characterized Carter as being “at peace,” while acknowledging Carter’s lifelong dedication to humanitarian efforts and peace negotiations, a commitment that extended far beyond his presidency. The former president’s death on Dec. 29, 2024, at the age of 100, came just over 13 months after the passing of his wife, Rosalynn, at the age of 96.
