Former President Jimmy Carter, at the age of 98, enters home hospice care. While known for his political career, his legacy is intertwined with Habitat for Humanity, where he and Rosalynn dedicated decades of service alongside volunteers.
Former President Jimmy Carter, aged 98 and the longest-lived American president, has chosen home hospice care in Georgia. Known for his moderate Democratic stance during his single term as the 39th president, he navigated the political landscape after the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal. However, Carter is also deeply associated with the nonprofit organization Habitat for Humanity, alongside his wife Rosalynn.
For decades, they have actively volunteered with Habitat, a commitment so ingrained in his public image that many mistakenly believe he founded it. Rosalynn passed away on November 19th at their Plains, Georgia home, at the age of 96. Habitat CEO Jonathan Reckford clarified the misconception, stating that President Carter did not start or run Habitat, which was founded in 1976, the same year Carter was elected president. Carter's presidency ended in 1980 after a single term, and four years later, he and Rosalynn embarked on their first Habitat mission. Reckford recounts their dedication, highlighting their participation in rebuilding a tenement in New York City, sleeping in a church basement and working alongside volunteers. Reckford shared stories of Carter's humility, such as giving up their room for a honeymoon couple and assisting a father and son with toilet installation. Carter continued his Habitat work well into his 80s and early 90s, despite health challenges.
