These days, just about everyone knows Jimi Hendrix for his reputation as the greatest guitarist of all time. The American musician and vocalist revolutionized guitar playing, popularizing more expressive methods of finger picking.
He also experimented with new improvisational techniques during his live performances that made folk songs and even the “Star Spangled Banner” sound electric and blues-infused. But Hendrix wasn’t always such a runaway success. Born in Seattle in 1942, he faced a difficult childhood and eventually found himself forced to join the military, where he struggled to fit in. However, his fate changed when he met a fellow serviceman who truly saw his potential. Only one serviceman took an interest in Hendrix: Private Billy Cox, who was reportedly ducking out of the rain at camp one day, just outside of Service Club No. 1, when he heard someone playing the guitar. He followed the sound and found Hendrix strumming with the impressive and highly original technique that would later render him famous. Cox even described the sound as an unexpected combination of “John Lee Hooker and Beethoven.” A passionate musician himself, Cox borrowed a bass guitar and jammed with Hendrix. Kindred spirits, the two struck up a friendship and musical partnership over a matter of weeks, culminating in the formation of an informal band aptly named The Casuals. Jimi Hendrix and Billy Cox Didn’t Always Work Together, But They Always Supported Each Other Hendrix’s military career was not destined to last . His friendship with Cox, on the other hand, proved enduring. Both musicians were discharged from the military in 1962, after which they moved to Clarksville, Tennessee and formed the band The King Kasuals. Although Hendrix had long played guitar, The King Kasuals was his first stab at mainstream success. Along with Cox and Leonard Moses, he played covers at small shows until he garnered the confidence to perform in Nashville. Much like during their time in the Army, Cox proved to be a source of both stability and encouragement for Hendrix. He has recalled, for instance, waking the latter up for gigs and even making him an extra-long cord so he could wander off and perform his signature onstage antics. In 1966, however, Cox and Hendrix’s paths diverged. Hendrix took the opportunity to perform as a sideman for various R&B acts, while Cox chose to remain in Nashville. More or less anchored in New York City, Hendrix would often solicit help from his old friend, who often sent money back. “I was a little more stable,” Cox admits, “but knew I was very supportive of what he was all about and what we were really about.”Posts 8 By Jeremy Urquhart For his part, Hendrix tried to reciprocate Cox’s support. When he was finally discovered by record producer Chas Chandler, Hendrix personally returned to Nashville—with Little Richard in tow—to retrieve Cox and catapult him to stardom. As it turns out, Hendrix had personally referred Cox to Little Richard as a backup musician, and the referral was so strong that Cox had no need to audition. Cox, however, declined Hendrix and Little Richard’s offer, opting instead to remain in Nashville. There, he experienced a degree of creative freedom that he felt Hendrix was forced to sacrifice by diving into the mainstream. It wasn’t until 1969 that he played with his old Army friend again, first at Woodstock, then during the live recording of Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys album, and lastly during The Cry of Love Tour. It’s hard to know what would have become of Hendrix—how long it would have taken him to find fame, or if he'd have found it to begin with—if it weren’t for his friendship with Cox. The latter encouraged his friend and provided crucial creative and social support, spurring Hendrix to envision a life beyond the military, perform live, and follow his dreams. While the friends’ paths diverged and converged over time, Cox has no regrets, demurring, “I think Jimi knew his destiny and I knew my destiny.” And those grandiose, individual destinies have made indelible marks on music history.
