Jim Obergefell, the gay-rights activist who was the lead plaintiff in the 2015 U.S. Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, is running for a seat in the Ohio House of Representatives
in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. Mr. Swearingen wasn’t immediately available for comment.
In the 2015 case that bears Obergefell’s name, the Supreme Court in a 5-4 decision struck down restrictions that were in effect in 13 states and ordered all 50 states to recognize same-sex unions. Mr. Obergefell had sued the state of Ohio after it wouldn’t list him on the death certificate of his spouse because Ohio at the time didn’t recognize same-sex marriage.
Ohio representatives serve two-year terms and can serve up to four consecutive terms. Ohio’s primary elections areMr. Obergefell said he was born and raised in Sandusky, Ohio in a blue-collar, Roman Catholic family. He moved to Cincinnati to go to college and worked as a high-school teacher. He was living in Cincinnati when the Supreme Court case launched.
