Jim Matherly is running to represent seat P in the Alaska State Senate.
He said it’s been his goal since high school to help his local community and then, eventually, his state. “It’s been a really great progression for me, from being on the city council for 2 terms, then city mayor, it just to me made perfect sense to represent the larger interior because the districts I would help would be outside the limits a little bit, and I could take that to Juneau and learn more about how the state works, primarily with how to help the Interior.
Matherly hopes to bring a reasoned voice to the capital. He said, “I think too many people watch a state capitol, they watch national politics, and all they see is fighting. All they see are things being thrown back and forth a each other, especially on social media, or as I call it, unsocial media. So I’d like to go to Juneau and work with everybody.”
According to Matherly, the issues of homelessness and the opioid problem are near and dear to his heart. “I think that the state needs to step in and try to do much, much more. They’re doing a lot now, but to me you can always get better, because it’s creating this generation of people that are just so challenged and so hurting that we need to cure that, because that’s kind of the future of the state.
Matherly is running against incumbent Scott Kawasaki and Alex Jafre in the primary election on August 16.
