He is a popular Republican governor challenging an unpopular Democratic incumbent in a heavily Republican state," Peter Francia, director of the ECU Center for Survey Research, said.
Manchin's approval rating is underwater at 33% approval, with 59% disapproving, according to the poll. The senator also trails Rep. Alex Mooney 40% to 41%, despite generally topping him in other polls. Justice, who is squaring off against Mooney in the primary, edges him out 53% to 12%. Manchin has been coy about his 2024 plans and has recently stepped up his criticism of the Biden administration over the Inflation Reduction Act and other hot-button topics.
