Hines, who was 76, died in his home state of California on June 3. Jones passed away last Wednesday of lung cancer in his hometown of Pittsburg, 40 miles north of Longview. He was 82.I was moved just talking to Hines, as I did several times over the years, about his exploits and those of the great TSU track team, the Flying Tigers.
Jim Hines, shown in 1968, was the first man to run under 10 seconds in the 100-meter dash, a record that stood for 14 years, nine months. He died recently in California.Entering the AAU Championships in Sacramento, Hines and several others had all been clocked at 10 seconds flat in the 100 meters. Eventually, 10 men ran 10-flat in the 100 via handheld timers.
“It’s just an honor to have one day been the fastest and to have even been in the category,” Hines said. “We had a lot of people who made their mark.”
