Sherrone Moore worked under Jim Harbaugh for six seasons, inherited many of his players and wants to play a similar style. So how does he leave his own imprint as a Michigan man?

Jim Harbaugh’s Michigan football shadow is impossible for Sherrone Moore to shed quickly — Jimmy WatkinsINDIANAPOLIS — Sherrone Moore stood in Jim Harbaugh’s shoes, holding his press conference during Jim Harbaugh’s media time slot while Michigan’s trio of Big Ten banners hung overhead with block “M” logos that might as well feature Harbaugh’s face and spectacles.

“Now it’s putting my own flavor on it, but not changing too much. Obviously, there’s a lot of things that have worked, but anything we can do to get better every single day, we’re going to try to do.” The answer depends on Moore’s ability to inject that “flavor” into a program that has tasted so much like Harbaugh for the last decade. The subtle changes, like playing music in practice and trading Harbaugh’s khaki pants for suit pants, are a start. So is Moore’s addition to the Harbaugh family’s famous “enthusiasm with unknown to mankind” mantra. It’s “contagious enthusiasm” now, and Moore corrected a reporter that stated otherwise on Thursday.

That’s the good news. Or the problem. Or both. Moore wants the same success Harbaugh enjoyed in Ann Arbor. And he wants to employ the same run-first, defense-friendly style that led to Michigan’s three straight conference championships. But if Moore merely maintains Harbaugh’s Michigan machine, how can the new coach make his own name? Maybe Moore doesn’t care. Or maybe Moore’s absence of Harbaugh quirk can become its own calling card.
