Jim DeStefano was a prolific Chicago-based architect for Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and later at his own shop, DeStefano + Partners.
As DeStefano’s career progressed at Skidmore, he became the lead architect on dozens of projects, including Three First National Plaza in Chicago, the Arthur Andersen accounting firm’s training center in St. Charles and the Gateway IV office building near Union Station. The November 1981 issue of Life magazine termed DeStefano one of Chicago’s “master builders,” along with Helmut Jahn, Stanley Tigerman, John Vinci and Bruce Graham.
In 1988, DeStefano left Skidmore to form DeStefano + Goettsch, later called DeStefano + Partners. The firm designed more than 150 buildings in the Chicago area, including the One South Dearborn office building, and the master plans for the River East project in Streeterville and the Central Station development in the South Loop.“People are drawn to us because they know we can do a good basic building,” DeStefano told the Tribune in 2000. “We want to do a great basic building.
Of the Division Street arches, DeStefano told the Tribune in 1995 that “I travel the world, and Chicago is identified with the rat-a-tat-tat of Al Capone. This design tells a different story.”
