Veteran journalist Jim Acosta departs CNN after declining a new role anchoring a late-night newscast. Acosta, known for his critical coverage of the Trump administration, chose to leave the network rather than accept the proposed move, which was widely seen as a demotion. His exit fuels speculation that CNN is softening its approach to covering Trump.
CNN offered Jim Acosta a new role anchoring a live two-hour newscast starting at midnight Eastern time, but he declined. The veteran journalist, known for his aggressive coverage of the Trump administration, told viewers Tuesday that he would leave the network instead. 'I've decided to move on,' Acosta said at the end of his ' CNN Newsroom' broadcast. 'One final message, don't give in to the lies, don't give into the fear.' Acosta, 53, joined CNN in 2007 after working at CBS News.
He gained recognition as a national political correspondent and became the network's chief White House correspondent in 2018. CNN released a statement acknowledging Acosta's contributions: 'Jim has had a long, distinguished nearly 20-year career at CNN, with a track record of standing up to authority, for the first amendment and for our journalistic freedoms. We want to thank him for the dedication and commitment he’s brought to his reporting and wish him the very best in the future.' Acosta's decision follows CNN's announcement of a daytime schedule revamp. 'The Situation Room' with anchors Wolf Blitzer and Pamela Brown will move to the 10 a.m. Eastern hour, where Acosta has been broadcasting since early last year. These changes are scheduled for implementation in March.CNN Chairman Mark Thompson presented the late-night time slot to Acosta as an opportunity to launch a fresh newscast airing in prime time on the West Coast, where cable news outlets typically rerun programs from earlier in the evening. However, the proposed move was widely viewed as relegating the journalist to a less prominent position with fewer viewers and advertising dollars. The political context also cast doubt on CNN's reasoning. Acosta has been among the most outspoken journalists covering the Trump administration. A 2018 White House press briefing confrontation during the president's first term resulted in the suspension of Acosta's White House press credentials, which a court later reinstated. Several political commentators have suggested that CNN aimed to move Acosta out of a more visible time slot to appease Trump, who is known for his retaliatory actions against media critics. Acosta's departure further strengthens the narrative that CNN has adopted a less confrontational approach towards covering Trump in his second term. 'Acosta is one of your most independent, unafraid hosts,' Joe Walsh, a former Republican congressman and frequent CNN guest, wrote on X. 'To demote him to ... appease the crybaby in the White House is pathetic. And an abdication of your duty to hold ALL public officials to account. Shame on you CNN.
