Jill Gearin, who broadcasts games for a Diamondbacks affiliate, called a few innings on Tuesday in the majors, becoming the first female play-by-play voice in club history.
LOS ANGELES — Jill Gearin became the first woman to call play-by-play for the Diamondbacks in franchise history, filling in for three innings during the first game of Tuesday’s doubleheader at Dodger Stadium.
“I was excited by the idea but wasn’t sure it was going to come to fruition,” Gearin said. “I kept in touch and it just kind of worked out.” Gearin’s time in the booth was eventful from the very first pitch, which the Diamondbacks’ Daulton Varsho drove out to right field for a home run. She said the home run allowed her to settle in more easily.
