Former First Lady Jill Biden discussed her commitment to brutal honesty with President Biden, reflected on the June 2024 debate controversy, defended her memoir's limited political content and marked her 75th birthday at a book launch in Washington, D.C.
At a book launch for her forthcoming White House memoir, held on the steps of the historic Sixth & I Synagogue in Washington, D.C. , former First Lady Jill Biden addressed an audience of supporters, staff members, and a few members of Congress.
The occasion, which also marked her 75th birthday, turned into a candid discussion of her marriage, the 2024 presidential campaign and the emotional toll of reliving the fallout from the June debate in which President Joe Biden stumbled on stage. Jill began by reading excerpts from student evaluations posted on Rate My Professor, where former college students described her teaching style as "tough but honest.
" She used those comments as a springboard to explain why she feels compelled to be brutally honest with her husband, saying, "He is the love of my life, but I have to tell you I'm honest with him because no one else will. " The remark set the tone for a candid, sometimes painful, recollection of the months following the disastrous debate in Atlanta, where Biden's performance against former President Donald Trump sparked a wave of criticism and intensified calls for him to withdraw from the race.
Jill said she had never watched the clip with him before he took the stage, and she has since been asked repeatedly by reporters to replay the moment.
"I never wanted to see that again in my life, but after two days of press, they keep saying, 'Watch that clip,'" she told the crowd, describing the book tour as a "painful" experience that forces her to confront a public moment she would rather forget. She also recounted how, in the weeks after the debate, she accompanied Joe to a modest gathering at an Atlanta Waffle House and later to a rally where she praised his willingness to answer every question from supporters.
Despite the criticism, she emphasized that the couple's relationship has always been built on openness: "I never lie for him, and he knows I'm honest because no one else will be.
" Jill noted that doctors had reassured her that Joe's health was stable, echoing the familiar line she heard in private briefings: "Jill, he's fine. " She added that the couple has kept many personal health issues, including her own menopause symptoms, out of the public eye, preferring to discuss them only with medical professionals.
The former First Lady also defended the political content of her memoir, pointing out that only one chapter deals directly with policy or campaign strategy, while the rest chronicles her four years in the East Wing, her work with community colleges, and her efforts to support military families. When pressed by journalist Paola Ramos about loyalty and the decision to stand by her husband after the June debacle, Jill responded, "I stood by him because I believe in the man I love, not because of politics.
" The audience, which included Senators Alex Padilla and Chris Coons, sang "Happy Birthday" as Jill lifted a white corsage given to her by Joe earlier that morning in New York City. She explained the gesture as a family tradition, noting that the Biden family had celebrated the milestone with a dinner in Manhattan the night before.
Dressed in a sparkling black blazer, white trousers and gold shoes, Jill appeared both poised and resolute, a visual reminder that the former first lady is intent on shaping the narrative of the Biden legacy while confronting the lingering wounds of the 2024 election. The event concluded with a brief, light‑hearted exchange in which President Biden, appearing via video from New York, asked his wife a playful question that drew laughter from the crowd, yet underscored his continued desire to be part of her story
